Moving Bibl.se over to Posterous...

In my last blog post I expressed doubts about the future of this blog. Now I know better :) It's a fresh move to a better blog platform that is needed, not another blog death...

Therefore I have now migrated all blog posts from Blogger to Posterous and also redirected the domain to this new site. Feels good since I am a great fan of Posterous' minimalistic interface and it's endless connection possiblities.

The main domain is the same as before: www.bibl.se. But if you use an RSS-reader you'll need to update your feed to the new adress.

Blog vacation

Not much has been happening here for the last few months. A cardinal sin for a blogger, I know ;-) but I have been so busy with other things, well you know the story.... and I honestly don't know if there still are valid reasons for keeping this blog up and running. There are so many other channels. Blogging isn't forever, right? The web is constantly changing and so are we, right?

Several times I have thought of dumping Bibl.se but still I can't make up my mind. So I have decided to take this blog for a longer vacation (well it sort of started already some months ago, didn't it?) and come back later this year (autumn, perhaps?) and ask that same question again - are there still valid reasons for keeping it? - and see what that leads to.

So, until then, have an awesome summer! :-)

Maybe it's not THAT necessary to be able to distinguish a browser from a search engine but maybe the fact that no more than 8% of the inquired in New York actually new what a browser was reveals our society´s urgent need for trained and user oriented information and communication specialists bridging the digital/knowledge gaps in society? If people in general are not really aware of what they are doing when they are using ICT, someone should be even more aware. Someone able to explain pedagogically and un-biased the who, why, when, and where of ICT. A librarian?

No, that's right, I confess, I did not manage to stick 100% to iPhone for my presentation preparations... gathered some thoughts in iPhone Notes on the fly and then moved them to Google Docs. Think I will stick to that one. That way I will be able to read and edit both ways, on PC and iPhone.... ;-)

(Just saw that one CAN sync Notes with PC but you need a jailbreaked iPhone, which is not what I have...)

So, let's re-write the challenge: now it's sort of a flexible challenge instead of a hard core fundamentalistic iPhone one :-))

Still wondering how I will present the final results... would love to use Apple's Keynote but, well, "library world is PC world". Unfortunately. :-( Another alternative is Prezi, which is a really really nice way of giving life to a presentation. But I still don't really get a grip on how it works, a bit confusing, and I don't have time to dive deep into Prezi ocean...

What about good old PowerPoint then? Well... eh...no! I just say no! :-)

After checking out some different Flash alternatives I suddenly remembered...yeah, Linnéa used ISSUU for a presentation once and that was really neat! Let's try that one!

OMG it's late Friday night, time for some dinner and a beer! :-)

The exhibition will be the first major presentation of Klingberg’s work in Sweden. For the exhibition Klingberg has both created new works and re-developed older pieces in response to the space at the Konsthall - everything from sculptures and installations to wall paintings and projections. Combining pattern images with sculptures and sound pieces, Gunilla Klingberg is perhaps best known for her characteristic patterns of recycled cut-price supermarket logotypes. The modest and mundane logotypes of Sparlivs and Lidl are transformed into seductively beautiful oriental patterns, while the logotype of Spar forms the foundation for a kaleidoscopic animation.

I remember when I first saw the news about the death of Olof Palme, I can re-vision it just as if it was yesterday: morning rush, a newspaper headline at Skanstull metro station.... "Olof Palme assassinated"

Yesterday morning: a very special phone call that will be recorded in my memory forever and ever: morning rush, blue metro line, making my way to Kista:

"You have been granted this years Bengt Hjelmqvist Prize".

"Qué? Are you joking?"

Awesome, that's the correct word. Filled with awe. That's as close as it comes to describe my feelings. Awe, in the sense of being overwhelmed and excited, but also somehow frightened. A bit like growing up. Since yesterday I'm an adult in a new, happy... and awesome way...

And this is my first encounter with one of the most respected and trusted of all Swedish librarians: Bengt Hjelmqvist. Who was he? What were his challenges? I have to find out...

And I'm so very grateful for all the warm comments and greetings from collegues and friends.

I wrote it today and I repeat it: You are the greatest!

One of the ideas behind BiblFeed is to mix microblogging feeds together with feeds from "ordinary" blogs. This seems to fit well into Mashable's predictions about blog design in 2009:

Tweets move out of the sidebar: More bloggers will mix blog posts and tweets into a single column together a la Tumblr, rather than keeping them in the sidebar. More new themes will have a built-in style for displaying tweets in an elegant way amongst blog posts. Wordpress users will find the Twitter tools plugin useful.

Loosing friends, and finding new ones

While everybody else has been busy updating their blogs before, during and after the holidays, writing summaries of 2008 and wishing for the 2009, I have completely neglected this blog. Sorry, shame on me. Not updating regulary is of course one of the cardinal sins when it comes to reader maintanence. No updating, no readers, just that simple. And, yes, as a result stats are all but impressive right now ;-)

What is it then that has refrained me from blogging? One important reason is of course BiblFeed, a new Ning community which I launched recently together with some cool friends from the Swedish (digital) library world. It has been quite a success I must say, very inspiring to see lots of new members signing up - we are now more than 180 members, wow! :-).

What is Bibl Feed then? Well, put in short: the purpose of BiblFeed is to collect and present - in a simple and funny way - the digital lifestream of the Swedish library world. Anything worth feeding, closely or remotely related to library activities, qualify for the feed: library websites and blogs, librarian's updates on media or bookmark sharing sites like Flickr, YouTube and Delicious etc. and updates coming in from microblogging tools like Twitter and Jaiku. This way one gets the opportunity to get a rather comprehensive overview, a snapshot, of what is going on right now in first of all the Swedish digital bibliosphere but also in the nordic countries and in the english speaking library world. Please don't hesitate to join, whoever you are and wherever you come from! :-)

Testing Windows Live Writer

I know, it IS a Microsoft product, and one should know better by now. I know. But on ProBlogger.net the Windows Live Writer is mentioned as an Essential PC Apps for Bloggers. And since this actually is an open tool for a change (you can use it with WP, Blogger etc... not just Microsoft products) I thought well let's try it out!

What is Windows Live Writer? It's an editing tool that supposedly boosts your blogging experience, helping you publish your content in a smoother and nicer way. I'm writing this inside Writer and after I've finished the editing it will all be published to Blogger, my preferred blogging tool at the moment.

This is what it looks like inside, while editing in Live Writer:

The "insert photo" feature was better than in Blogger, nice!

There's one feature called Insert Map where you can zoom to and save a location and finally insert it in your blogpost. I tried this twice but the only result was this:

NordLib 2.0 next Friday is going to be a really interesting event: it's one of the first real efforts in the Swedish library world to actually try out different Web 2.o tools in a conference context. Not just talking, but also learning by doing! :-) The conference is (of course) on Facebook, the event will be streamed live and on the conference blog there is already some interesting comments worth responding to - in brief, the conference team seems to be very focused on making this into an extraordinary learning experience!

Please join the conversation - first of all on the conference blog - but also, if you like, here on Bibl.se! Just like the conference organizers (and other bloggers?) I will also be liveblogging from the event, making use of the cool tool Coveritlive. Just saw, by the way, that it now also has Twitter integration... can't wait to try it out!

At Internet Librarian International 2008, Thomas Brevik said something like: "iPhone is the future of libraries" So, when are we going to hold the future in our hands? Well, never, as long as we keep banning it in the libraries....

Give the digital conversations some AIR!

Aaaahhhh.... Adobe AIR is like a smooth Mac-ish layer on top of a dull PC environment. Installed it the other day and must say I'm pleased. AIR based TweedDeck gives new life to Twitter and Readair spices up Google Reader. Both really worth trying!

Another thing worth doing is adding that magazine reading feeling to RSS. I recently re-discovered how pleasant and more enjoyable it is to read blog feeds when you actually can see the content, not just the headlines, and also embedded photos and videos. And it's just a mouse-click away: share your Google Reader feed online (published folders) and you'll get a much more attractive reading interface compared to reading inside Google Reader.

This is what my favourite Google Reader feed looks like when published: Biblioteksbloggar ("Library Blogs", which in my case means all kinds of blogs that are relevant to library folks, at least to me ;-)
